Gary Dirks, Director of Arizona State Universitys LightWorks and Former President of BP China, Appointed Director of ASUs Global Institute of Sustainability

Tempe, AZ (PRWEB) March 14, 2013

Gary Dirks, director of Arizona State University’s LightWorks Initiative and former president of BP China and BP Pacific-Asia, has been appointed director of ASUs Global Institute of Sustainability (GIOS), with the goal of expanding the global impact of ASU.

GIOSs charter is to advance research, education, business practices and global partnerships that aid in the transformation of todays world into a more sustainable endeavor, said ASU President Michael Crow. With the appointment of Gary Dirks as director of GIOS, we look to increase the global impact of our work and surge ahead as a leader in sustainability.

Dirks was chosen for this role to help GIOS solve global sustainability challenges. Dirks is a distinguished sustainability scientist, Julie Ann Wrigley Chair of Sustainable Practices, and teaching faculty member in the School of Sustainability at ASU.

“Gary possesses exactly the combination of skills, experience and intellectual curiosity to lead the Institute, said Julie Ann Wrigley, co-chair of the GIOS Board of Directors. As a former global business executive, member of the GIOS Board of Directors and leader of ASU LightWorks Initiative, a better leader could not have been chosen at this point in the development of the Institute.

While in China, Dirks grew the BP operation from 30 employees and no revenue in 1995 to more than 1,300 employees and revenues of about $ 4 billion in 2008.

Gary has demonstrated his ability to set a grand vision, align projects and people around that vision to create solutions to grand challenges that impact our society, said Sethuraman Panch Panchanathan, senior vice president for ASUs Office of Knowledge Enterprise Development. He does all of this in a rapid time frame that is consistent with the spirit of the New American University.

Dirks received his doctorate in chemistry from ASU in 1980, and after working in the energy industry, returned to ASU to lead the LightWorks in 2009. The LightWorks Initiative is ASUs multidisciplinary research effort to harness the energy of sunlight and apply it across a broad spectrum of technology related challenges. Dirks will continue to lead the initiative as part of his new role at GIOS.

Dirks previously served as chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce in Beijing and as the only foreign member of the British Prime Ministers China Task Force. He was a founding director of the China Business Council for Sustainable Development, past chairman of the China U.S. Center for Sustainable Development and served as a board member of the India Council for Sustainable Development.

In 2003 Dirks received Chinas Friendship Award, the highest recognition granted to foreign citizens, and was appointed Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George from the UK in 2005. In December 2008, he was recognized by the Peoples Daily as one of the 10 most influential multinational company leaders of the last 30 years of Chinas economic development.

GIOS is an extraordinary place with people who understand sustainability at a very deep level and who know how to apply sustainability concepts to solve real-world problems, said Dirks. The challenge for me will be building on a very strong foundation to extend the reach and impact of the Institute.

The Solar Center Of Woodland Hills Anounces Tax Incentives For Going Solar

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) March 12, 2013

Californias use of solar energy is skyrocketing. Thanks to lucrative rebates and tax incentives the California Solar Initiative has now funded enough solar power systems to generate 1 gigawatt of electricity the highest of any state in the country.

Launched in 2007, the $ 2.4 billion California Solar Initiative aims to install enough solar power systems to generate 3 gigawatts of power by 2016. The program is part of Californias Million Solar Roofs Initiative, a $ 3.3 billion package of financial incentives offered by the state to jump start Californias solar industry.

According to Solar Centers Sergio Bruna Southern Californias leading provider of integrated and renewable energy products – customers who install solar energy systems can expect to save thousands of dollars on their utility bills in addition to enjoying the rebates and tax breaks provided by the California Solar Initiative.

The rebates offered by the California Solar Initiative decline over time and are now 92 percent lower than they were when the program began. Consumers should take advantage of this program now! says Bruna. Once these rebates are gone, theyre gone. Its really a no brainer.

Bruna also recommends that consumers do their research and make sure they contact a reputable solar contractor such as the Solar Center. There are lots of unscrupulous companies out there trying to take advantage of not only consumers but the governments programs as well. You need to call a professional company such as Solar Center who has the experience to make sure you get all of the incentives you are entitled to as well top of the line products and professional installation.

Solar Center offers a way to save thousands on energy costs and to increase your property value without increasing your property tax.

Commercial Solar Company Easy Energy Completes Massive Solar Water Heating System for Fellowship Square in Arizona

Tucson, Arizona (PRWEB) March 12, 2013

Phoenix-based Easy Energy has just announced it has completed the installation of its largest customer site to date for solar water heating. The commercial solar company in Arizona installed 600 solar thermal collectors on carports throughout the community which will meet a significant portion of the hot water demand for the 615 -unit facility, serving more than 650 residents.

The installation includes collectors for domestic water heating at each of the four resident buildings as well as 2 of the 5 swimming pools which are heated year-round for resident recreational use.

The management of energy costs and the HVAC equipment required to create a comfortable living environment for our residents is a major focus of our Operations Team, says George Ortega, Executive Director. He adds, The addition of the solar water heating system eases the heating burden on our boiler equipment and reduces natural gas costs. This is a long term solution that is more sustainable and more economical for our facility.

As part of the system, the Arizona commercial solar company added 17,000 gallons of hot water storage via heat exchange tanks to maximize the daytime solar harvest and allow the heat to be used after the sun goes down. The existing boilers will supplement heating needs whenever the solar heat cannot meet the demand.

Solar water heating is a solid and proven technology, not just in our sunny Arizona climate, but throughout the world, says Brian Bartel, President of Easy Energy and lead Project Manager, Our installation staff has enjoyed hearing the comments of the residents, many of whom shared their stories of using solar water heating in their own homes in years past. Added Bartel, Although some of the controller technology has improved in recent years, the basic premise of transferring solar sunlight to water has endured and will continue to serve as a renewable energy source for years to come.

Stanek Windows Makes Generous Donation to Wehr Nature Center

WEST ALLIS, WISC. (PRWEB) March 11, 2013

When Stanek Windows by Great Day Improvements, LLC saw the Wehr Nature Center in Whitnall Park had a need to replace its old, wooden windows, it didnt hesitate to get involved. The company recently donated and installed the first of what it hopes will become 105 High Energy-Efficiency Vinyl Windows at the center Feb. 19, providing much-needed relief for an office area always overheating and suffering from poor ventilation.

Now, the newly- installed Stanek-brand slider window will allow air to circulate in when needed and keep warm air from escaping the office during colder months.

Wehr has many windows that are in great need of being replaced inside the nature center, and Stanek was more than happy to step up and provide the first of what we hope will be many more to come, Staneks Lynda Chase said. Since our windows feature full structural reinforcement and the best-looking wood grains on the market, we felt theyd be a perfect fit. Employees and visitors alike will really be able to hear and feel the nature centers beautiful natural surroundings as a result.

Stanek will be working with the center and Friends of Wehr, a non-profit organization dedicated to the support and promotion of the nature center and its environmental education programs, in seeking sponsorship donations to install the remaining 104 windows with Stanek-brand ones. These windows would eliminate any future rot that would occur over time as the buildings existing windows are real wood.

In addition, Stanek plans to customize different glass systems to compensate for individual room factors at the center, such as excessive heat entering in the educational room during the summer. The company will install Southwall Heat Mirror Technology Windows, similar to those used at the Empire State Building in New York City and the Northwestern Mutual Life Building in downtown Milwaukee. Another concern Stanek plans to address with its expertise is the protection of surrounding wildlife by finding ways to keep wild birds from flying into Wehrs large windows.

Of course, community support will be vital in helping Stanek and Wehr in their goal of replacing all of the centers old, wooden windows. The nature center currently offers a number of programs and special events for its 60,000-plus yearly visitors, and Lynda is excited about Staneks role in contributing to the continued enjoyment of a valued community resource.

If you havent visited the Wehr Nature Center yet, youre missing areas that youd think you would only see tucked away in the upper parts of Northern Wisconsin, she said. Within minutes, you can literally be in the great outdoors and experience such picturesque wooded, lake or prairie flatland areas from any location around the Milwaukee or Waukesha County areas.

Those interested in more information on the project or would like to make a donation towards the centers new Stanek windows should contact Wehr Nature Center Director Deb McRae (414) 425-8550 or debra(dot)mcrae(at)ces(dot)uwex(dot)edu.

French Gerleman Completes Solar Testing and Learning Center, Launches Clean Energy Group

(PRWEB) March 07, 2013

While solar energy itself isnt anything new, its popularity is rising as growing numbers of commercial and residential customers broaden their knowledge of the systems and they find the many benefits that solar can bring to their environment. French Gerleman, an independent distributor of electrical, automation, datacom and power transmission equipment, recently completed installation of one of the areas largest and most complex solar arrays, designed to test and demonstrate a wide variety of components and technologies while offering customers an educational environment to help them make informed decisions.

The installation coincides with the launch of French Gerlemans clean energy group, which provides solar energy products to industrial, commercial and residential electrical contractors.

When we began planning the solar testing and learning center, we were very careful to perform due diligence on the products and manufacturers we offered, and wanted to ensure that our educational and consultative manner of serving clients was in place, said Adam Ruebsam, Vice President of Commercial and Industrial Sales. We built the center to support that purpose and give customers an environment where they could see the components in action, learn from our experience, and make the best decisions for their particular environment.

French Gerlemans solar testing and learning center was installed at the companys 174,000 square foot headquarters building in St. Louis. The system is unique in that it incorporates four different monitoring systems, three panel technologies of various wattages and three different types of inverter technologies. The system took more than a year to design and build due to its complexity, and cost approximately 25% more than an average install.

The company was committed to the investment, as it incorporated all the components customers would need to evaluate when considering a solar system. It was expensive and time consuming to do what we did, said Ruebsam, but we are in the business of providing technology and solutions for our customers, so we wanted to create an atmosphere where they could experience an active working system with the components they were considering. The testing center allows them to do just that, and we see it as a critical piece of French Gerlemans solar product offering.

The firm will continue to update the solar testing and learning center as new technologies are available.

Through its clean energy group, French Gerleman will support and offer components from trusted manufacturers such as SolarWorld, REFUsol, Fronius, Siemens, Cooper B-Line, Legrand, Unirac, SMA, Power-One, and Tigo Energy. Each of these manufacturers is represented in French Gerlemans solar testing center, allowing customers firsthand experience of the various components.

Ruebsam cites French Gerlemans distribution area, which covers Missouri, Illinois, and Kansas, as a prime growth area for solar power. The region has recently begun its journey towards increased energy independence and environmental awareness, and offers favorable weather conditions for sunlight. This, in addition to tax incentives and falling prices, make the market favorable for growth in solar energy.

About French Gerleman

French Gerleman is the regions leading supplier of electrical, automation, datacom, and power transmission products and services to industrial, commercial and construction markets. Based in St. Louis, MO, French Gerleman has locations in Quincy, IL; Kansas City, KS; Columbia, MO; and Washington, MO. For more information, visit http://www.frenchgerleman.com.

Gulf Akash JV enter into exclusive supply agreement with Targray to offer biodiesel out of the Buckeye Terminal in Hartford, Illinois

Harford, IL (PRWEB) March 05, 2013

Through their existing Joint Venture, Gulf Hydrocarbon Partners, Ltd (GHP) and Akash Energy Inc. have collaborated with Targray Industries to offer biodiesel out of the Buckeye Terminal in Hartford, Illinois. The terminal is located at Buckeye Terminal, 220 East Hawthorne St. Hartford, IL 62048 and supports 24/7 loading.

Gulf Hydrocarbon Partners, Ltd., has offered biodiesel out of this location since 2010, but shut down operations at the end of 2012 due to tough economic conditions in the biodiesel market. The blend economics inverted at the end of 2012, providing little incentive for our customers to integrate biodiesel in their distribution streams. said Jess Hewitt, President of Gulf Hydrocarbon, Inc. With the reinstatement of the tax credit, blend margins have improved dramatically, and we now feel there is a viable opportunity to offer biodiesel for blending said Hewitt. We offer biodiesel with and without RINs therefore a customer can choose to take their biodiesel with or without the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) credits.

The biodiesel tanks at Hartford are heated and insulated and the loading system is automatic allowing buyers to self-load and splash biodiesel over diesel fuel. Illinois offers a tax exemption for blends B11 and higher and Gulf offers biodiesel at a far better price than pre-blended fuel available in the same area. said Jess Hewitt of Gulf Hydrocarbon. Justin Heller, President of Akash Energy agreed saying, What we are offering the customer is flexibility to take biodiesel neat or in any blend of diesel fuel whether that is B11, B20 or higher. We can customize the supply contract to meet the customers needs. By offering the flexibility of providing fuel with or without RINs, we simplify the process of integrating biodiesel for non-obligated parties. Customers who choose to take RINs can use the gallons towards their RFS obligation while improving margins on wet gallons.

Targray Industries will be the exclusive supplier of biodiesel to the Gulf Hydrocarbon-Akash joint venture at Hartford, Illinois. Targray, based out of Montreal, is a global trading and distribution company serving high-tech manufacturing and energy markets for over 23 years. Targrays biodiesel trading operations provides access to multiple strategic supply sources in the region. Targray will leverage their supply to maintain an inventory position in the tank. The Gulf Akash JV offers us access to the downstream markets that until now we have not actively participated in. This provides us with stronger returns on our investment as well as more ratable sales said Andrew Richardson, President of Targray International. Working with Targray, we are able to create an efficient link from producer to end users. This translates into better blend margins for our customers, thereby increasing sales. Its a win-win across the board. Heller said.

About Targray Industries, Inc.

Founded in 1989, Targray is a global trading and distribution company operating in the Optical Media, Solar, Battery, and Biofuels markets. Targray has offices worldwide and sales in over 50 countries. In the Biofuels space Targray markets biodiesel, co-products, feedstock and operates a fleet of railcars. While developing a business plan Heller solicited the help of Anish Mashettiwar, a childhood friend who was operating an independent legal practice at the time. Mashettiwar agreed to join Heller in his efforts, and together they founded Akash Energy, Inc., with the purpose of developing an efficient distribution infrastructure to provide reliable and consistent biodiesel supply to the end-user market.
